To pass the time, he began taking filler classes during these early morning hours, which led him to eventually stumble upon psychology. Bandura explained, One morning, I was wasting time in the library. Someone had forgotten to return a course catalog and I thumbed through it attempting to find a filler course to occupy the early time slot. I noticed a course in psychology that would serve as excellent filler. It sparked my interest and I found my career. He earned his degree from the University of British Columbia in 1949 after just three years of study and then went on to graduate school at the University of Iowa. The school had been home to  Clark Hull  and other psychologists including Kenneth Spence and  Kurt Lewin. While the program took an interest in social learning theory, Bandura felt that it was too focused on  behaviorist  explanations. Bandura earned his MA degree in 1951 and his Ph.D. in clinical psychology in 1952. Career and Theories After earning his Ph.D., he was offered a position at Stanford University. Bandura accepted the offer (even though it meant resigning from another position he had already accepted). He began working at Stanford in 1953 and has continued to work at the university to this day. It was during his studies on adolescent aggression that Bandura became increasing interested in vicarious learning, modeling, and imitation. Albert Banduras  social learning theory  stressed the importance of  observational learning, imitation, and modeling. Learning would be exceedingly laborious, not to mention hazardous, if people had to rely solely on the effects of their own actions to inform them what to do, Bandura explained in his 1977 book on the subject. His theory integrated a continuous interaction between behaviors, cognitions, and the environment. Bobo Doll Study Banduras most famous experiment was the 1961  Bobo doll study. In the experiment, he made a film in which an adult model was shown beating up a Bobo doll and shouting aggressive words. The film was then shown to a group of children. Afterward, the children were allowed to play in a room that held a Bobo doll. Those who had seen the film with the violent model were more likely to beat the doll, imitating the actions and words of the adult in the film clip. The Bobo doll study was significant because it departed from behaviorism’s insistence that all behavior is directed by reinforcement or rewards. The children received no encouragement or incentives to beat up the doll; they were simply imitating the behavior they had observed. Bandura termed this phenomenon observational learning and characterized the elements of effective observational learning as attention, retention, reciprocation and motivation. Banduras work emphasizes the importance of social influences, but also a belief in personal control. People with high assurance in their capabilities approach difficult tasks as challenges to be mastered rather than as threats to be avoided, he has suggested. Is Albert Bandura a Behaviorist? While most psychology textbooks place Bandura’s theory with those of the behaviorists, Bandura himself has noted that he ...never really fit the behavioral orthodoxy. Even in his earliest work, Bandura argued that reducing behavior to a stimulus-response cycle was too simplistic. While his work used behavioral terminology such as conditioning and reinforcement, Bandura explained, ...I conceptualized these phenomena as operating through cognitive processes. Authors of psychological texts continue to mischaracterize my approach as rooted in behaviorism, Bandura has explained, describing his own perspective as social cognitivism. Selected Publications Bandura has been a prolific author of books and journal articles over the last 60 years and is the most widely cited living psychologist. Some of Banduras best-known books and journal articles have become classics within psychology and continue to be widely cited today. His first professional publication was a 1953 paper titled Primary and Secondary Suggestibility that appeared in the Journal of Abnormal and Social Psychology. In 1973, Bandura published Aggression: A Social Learning Analysis, which focused on the origins of aggression. His 1977 book Social Learning Theory presented the basics of his theory of how people learn through observation and modeling. His 1977 article entitled Self-Efficacy: Toward a Unifying Theory of Behavioral Change was published in Psychological Review and introduced his concept of self-efficacy. The article also became an instant classic in psychology. Albert Banduras Contributions to Psychology Bandura’s work is considered part of the cognitive revolution in psychology that began in the late 1960s. His theories have had a tremendous impact on  personality psychology,  cognitive psychology, education, and  psychotherapy. History must be learned and understood so past events do not happen again. The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are these types of events. By the time Truman took office, Japan was nearly defeated. There were people in the Japanese government trying to find a way to end the war. However many believed the Japanese would fight to the bitter end. This is the same thing many Americans would do if people landed on our coast to fight. Our government did not want this war to be drawn out and we were still losing soldiers due to Japanese submarines and suicidal ?kamikaze? attacks. Even though Japan might agree to a negotiate peace with conditions, after twelve years of Japan military aggression against China and over three and one-half years of war with the United States our leaders were reluctant to accept anything less than completed surrender. Many Americans had an intense hatred towards Japanese?s more than the Germans. There were many reasons for this feeling, the bombing of Pearl Harb or, the horrible acts committed by Japanese soldiers, mistreatment of American prisoners and especially for racial reasons. This could be seen even in the United States with the camp many Japanese Americans were placed in during the war. Not to say some punishment was not deserved the question continues to be if the atomic bomb was the right and ethical thing to do. This continues to be a controversial issue even today. Many historians argue that it was necessary to win the war and save lives. Others have argued that Japan would have surrendered anyway and President Truman used the bomb to intimidate the Soviet Union. This question may never be answered but it will be something that is continually discussed. If you think about it a weapon of mass destruction can only be used for one thing. It would never have the effect they want unless it is used at least once. . As the work continued towards the completion of the bomb and its delivery system, there was much debate over how to use the bomb. Some wanted to do a demonstration to convince Japan to surrender. However our government was concerned to bomb might be a dud, prisoners of war could be moved to that area, and/or they might shoot the B-29 bomber planes down. However some of the Manhattan Project scientists were not satisfied that their voices were being heard. They believed since they had built the bomb they had a right in helping determine how it would be used. In the end the scientists agreed that the bomb should be used. There were four cities in Japan chosen that would have the most psychological impact and weaken the military resistance. Kyoto was one of original cities choose then removed because it was a cherished cultural center. In the end the cities were Hiroshima, Niigata, Kokura Arsenal, and Nagasaki. There were two types of atomic bombs used in the bombing of Japan, one bomb had plutonium and one had uranium. There were also question regarding the effectiveness of the bombs since they had not been tested. Since there was not enough weapon grade uranium only the plutonium bomb was tested. It was called the Trinity test and at 5:30 a.m. on July 16, 1945 the test was successful. The final decision to drop the bomb was approved by President Truman. The order was to attack Hiroshima, Kokura, Niigate, and Nagasaki in this order after August 3rd. Japan was issued a warning to surrender or suffer prompt and utter destruction. The Potsdam Declaration made no mention of the emperor remaining as ceremonial head of state and it was rejected by Japan on July 29, 1945. During these negations soldiers were still being injured and killed in this war. On July 29th the Indianapolis was sunk by a Japanese submarine. There were also daily air raids and naval bombardment in Japan. All sides were continuing with the war during these negations. At 8:15 a.m. on August 6, 1945 a uranium bomb call ?Little Boy? was released over Hiroshima. This bomb detonated 1,900 feet above the city. External and Internal Motivation for Homework and Projects Do you know what drives you to get good grades or put that extra bit of effort into your science project? What is it that makes us want to do well- both on tests and in our lives? Our reasons or desires to succeed are our motivations. There are two key types of motivations:  intrinsic and extrinsic. The type of motivation that drives us actually affects how well we do.   Intrinsic motivation is the sort of desire that arises from within us. If you are an artist, you may be driven to paint because it brings you joy and peace. If you are a writer you may write to satisfy the need to create stories from the many ideas swimming around inside your head. These drives stem from an interest in the activity or job itself, without any external influence. Internal motivators often become defining qualities or characteristics of the person acting on them. Extrinsic motivation compels you to act based on some outside force or outcome. The desire is not one that would arise naturally within you, but because of someone or some consequence. You might be motivated to do some extra credit to keep from failing your math class. Your boss might offer an incentive program to make you work a little harder. These external influences can have a great impact on why or how people do what they do, sometimes even things that seem out of character.   While it would seem intrinsic motivation would be better than extrinsic, they both have their advantages. Being internally motivated is most rewarding in that the activity or area of study naturally brings a person pleasure. The desire to perform an action requires less effort than an externally driven motivation. Being good at the activity is not necessarily a factor. Many people are motivated to sing karaoke despite their musical ability, for example. Ideally, people would be intrinsically motivated to do well in all aspects of their life. However, that is not the reality. Extrinsic motivation is good for when someone has a job or an assignment to do that they do not really enjoy for its own sake. This can be beneficial in the workplace, school, and life in general. Good grades and the possibility of getting into a good college are good external motivators for a student. Receiving a promotion or a pay raise incentivizes employees to go above and beyond at work. Perhaps some of the most beneficial aspects of extrinsic motivators are that they encourage people to try new things. Someone that has never tried horseback riding may not know that it is something they might really enjoy. A teacher might encourage a talented young student to take classes they normally would not have, introducing them to a new area of interest.   Intrinsic and extrinsic motivations work in different ways but are equally important. It is really great to feel good about doing something you love and doing it well. However, no one can function in the world acting only on internal desires. Those external influences help people develop in all aspects of life.

How to Write an SEO Article – Part 2 How to Write an SEO Article Part 2 How to Write an SEO Article Part 2 By Colin In part one of How To Write An SEO Article, we looked at how important it is to get the basics of an SEO article correct from the start. We looked at the importance of writing relevant content to the user and not the search engine, and we also looked at the research that goes into keywords and keyphrases that are to be integrated into the article. Nothing that was described in part one should be considered difficult by anyone. If it is, please email me individually, making sure to swallow a pinch of salt before you do. In part two of How To Write An SEO Article, I’m going to take everything we have learned in part one and apply it to the article that needs to be written. I’ll also cover that slightly boring, but all-important, ‘techy bit’. Using Keywords and Keyphrases Okay, so you have your keywords either by your own intuition or from a client. Then what? Well, the first step is to go back to step one, and remind yourself what the actual article that is going to be so helpful and informative to the reader, is all about. Then, based on this remit, write the article, and along the way, include the keywords and keyphrases among the text in as natural and logical a manner as possible. It may be you can build the article around the keywords themselves, but the most important thing is not to over use them. It makes the article appear like an attempt at SEO article writing gone mad. Also, it won’t read well and a reader will give up before he gets half way through. If you are struggling to find suitable places for the keywords, never force it into the text just so you can include it. If it doesn’t flow with the natural rhythm of the piece, leave it out or re-write the text. If you still find it impossible to use it elsewhere in the piece, wipe the slate clean and re-write the article from an entirely new angle. Obviously, if you are writing to the demands of a client who has given you a difficult remit with awkward keywords, this rule may have to be bent a little, but being a creative freelance writer means being able to adapt to situations like this, so trust yourself and go with the flow. Point of Note #1: they wouldn’t need someone to do it for them, if they could do it themselves. Point of Note #2: remember you’re the expert, so write the article for the reader, not the algorithm. Where possible (although this may not be part of your remit), try to include one of the keyphrases in the headline, and if possible, the sub-headline. This is a neat way of taking the pressure off the article content, while keeping the keywords at the front of the search engine algorithm results when it comes around. Hypertext Links Creating hypertext links that are embedded within the content of an article, is a great way of increasing general interest, as well as allowing a higher chance of search engine spiders being able to reach it. Too many hypertext links within your text will only annoy readers, though, so creating links to every keyword is not recommended. Linking to other interesting articles or websites from other words or phrases, that may not be specific to the remit given to you, may help to build a higher percentage of user interest, as well as boost the SEO ranking of the page the article is published on. For example, here is a section from an SEO article for the music industry I recently wrote: â€Å"Bidding for concert tickets from an unknown Internet source, is not a good way of buying your all important seats to see Britney Spears.† The keyphrase in this article is ‘concert tickets’ and as you can see, has been used within the article’s context. However, it doesn’t take a genius to work out that more searches are run for the phrase ‘Britney Spears’ than for ‘concert tickets,’ therefore, not only is it mentioned in the same paragraph, but there is also a hypertext link included which links to her official site. Having both phrases, ‘concert tickets’ and ‘Britney Spears,’ alongside each other, is quite clearly a potent combination for anyone concerned who might want to run an Internet search like it; Britney fans, music fans, memorabilia collectors, ticket touts, etc. Therefore, this sentence when published, will look like this: â€Å"Bidding for concert tickets from an unknown Internet source, is not a good way of buying your all important seats to see Britney Spears.† Keyword Density Keyword density is a term often used in the context of SEO, and is often stressed as being a vital component of every SEO article writer’s armoury. The phrase came into being because keywords, which provide the foundation on which SEO copywriting is based, led many people to conclude that the more keywords included in a SEO article, the higher chance there is of that web page being ranked during a search. Scientific formulae were developed to try and prove this, and thus an industry was born. Unfortunately, in this writer’s experience, this is almost always complete rubbish. Generally, one will find that no matter how many times the phrase ‘Britney Spears,’ is used in an article, when published, it simply will not shoot into the top ten in Google’s search ranking. Good keyword usage is supported not by the amount of times it is used in a web article, but by the combinations of other relevant keywords it sits beside, as in the example given earlier of ‘Britney Spears’ and ‘concert tickets.’ Each individual, but related keyword, helps narrow the search down even further. However, even with the most advanced SEO keyword placement strategies in place, there is still one remaining factor that is vital to help support the use of keywords and keyphrases: web page construction. Which takes me neatly onto the ‘techy bit’. Web Page Optimisation (The ‘Techy Bit’) As a freelance writer this section isn’t really required, but I though it wouldn’t hurt to come to a better understanding of the different ways that keywords and SEO can be applied, to increase the page rank of a website. Within the construction of a simple HTML web page, is a section at the top called the Header. Within this section there are various meta tags, the most important of which is the Title tag, and the Meta description tag. Search engine spiders read the meta data within a webpage, and are attracted to those sites which have keywords present early on. Search engine spiders and web browsers read HTML code from top to bottom (meta data then content), so what comes first gets read first and is therefore output first. It is therefore very important for good web page optimisation to occur, that an emphasis be placed on the usage of keywords in the Title tags and Meta tags, and to have the most important ones placed near the beginning. For example, here is an extract of HTML data taken from a website that might have published the article on Britney Spears concert tickets: html head titleBritney Spears Concert Tickets/title meta name="Keywords" content="Britney Spears, concert tickets, Britney on tour, gigs, stadium tour, Toxic, Oops I Did It Again† /head body Bidding for bconcert tickets/b from an unknown Internet source, is not a good way of buying your all important seats to see a href=†britneyspears.com†Britney Spears/a †¦..etc. /body /html As you can see, the most important keyphrases were used in the web page title, as well as at the front of the meta keywords line. This compilation of original footage shot by Ken Kesey and his friends, known as the Merry Pranksters, follows their cross country bus trip in 1964 from California to New York to see the World’s Fair. Besides Kesey, the most well-known Prankster was Neal Cassady, who was the inspiration for Dean Moriarty in Jack Kerouac’s â€Å"On the Road† and the driver for the first leg of the journey. The film begins with a short biography of Kesey, a writer known for his novels â€Å"One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest† and â€Å"Sometimes a Great Notion.† The Merry Pranksters are introduced by their nicknames. Mba Programme A Different Experience For Me - 1606 Words

Introduction The MBA programme was a different experience for me, it was entirely different from what I was used to. As I’m from Sri Lanka, moving to a new country to do a master’s degree was an exciting prospect and I was looking forward to it with much interest. Although I’m from an IT background with and internship, I was always interested and eager to learn about the business world. Initially I was nervous because I was anticipating that most of my colleagues would be from highly experienced backgrounds. During the orientation, I met my future colleagues who would be in my cohort, and then we were combined with the rest of the cohort for the first semester. I’m usually vocal with my friends (Mentioned in ppd) but in t he workshop I was incredibility quiet, I believe this was my nervousness beginning to control me, during the scenarios created by the module leaders many of the colleagues were able to discuss about the situation. Initially I didn’t speak due to the nervousness but I went away soon as I got to know the new people in the group.
